I am no longer the
Steady thrum of heartbeats
When issues against women are
Comically displayed on televisions.
Like there’s something to
Laugh, guffaw, snicker, giggle–
But tell you what, I can name a little
Too many synonymous words
And I can slap them all to your face, too.

You see, she is no longer a suppressed voice,
Unable to tell you
That for all young girls,
You have the right to be here.
You have the same rights to life,
To be alive, to be secure,
To have a good life!
And yet you, in which you call yourself
Superior, tells her,
“You are nothing, go home.”

To see such rudeness from a person makes me very angry.
Because I am angry with the absurdity of it all –
That man continues to abuse their rights of freedom
And in return, women are frightened and scared —
So my question is “Why are you so intent on showing power over her…”
When you are not God?

So don’t laugh it off and make excuses.
Because I will not take any of that crap and nor will she.
I am a person of my own and so is she.
And I am a human being with rights and so is she.

The truth is, many people have no brains.
But for you girls, do not sit still on your couch
While the next police officer asks “Well, what were you wearing?”
To the next rape victim.
Because you and I both know that that is not the issue.

Believe me, when I say, no girl should hang their head in shame
Because they got touched without consent.
It’s not their friggin fault!
No one deserves to be raped (man or woman).
And no, it’s not snuggling, for you who
Even thought rape jokes on t-shirts are funny
Because it’s not!

I am for Gender Equality.
For both man and woman,
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender,
To be treated with equal respect.
With equal opportunities.
With equality.
With NO judgment.

And why must you counter that?
No man or woman should be victims of abuse
So why not fight?
No human being should live in fear.
So stand up, and smash inequality.
Because I stand for equality and justice for All.
So know that I stand right with you.

  1. You are a great person Benjamin. It’s not so easy to accept this concept of “equality” in a patriarchal society.
You are absolutely correct – no point men playing superior, just leave women alone, give the respect and dignity – and the world will be a better place to leave. Same goes for gays, lesbians, transgenders – why can’t we accept them? They are people just like us!! Who decided they are “abnormal”?
Unfortunately most of us, who consider themselves “educated” are trapped in the age old, rotten mindset of this society. Hope things change for better – but when? Nobody knows.
    Great read … 👍👍😊😊

  2. Wow, an amazing poem. You are right – we need to stand up when we see things that aren’t right. If we don’t, the cycle will just forever repeat itself. Thank you for talking about these important issues. Rape and abuse are still so prevalent, and people just want to sweep them under the rug and ignore it. Keep writing. Wish you the best – speak766

  3. Great poem with important thoughts. I always feel that unless men join in the movement for gender equality it will never really be achieved. Thanks for lighting a lamp.
